Five years ago before we started working together the group was conformed by around 15 women, today they are a group of around 50 women in the South of Peru. The group of ladies, have a high skill knitting level they learnt at their born place.
Almost all the ladies were born in Puno, a city located in southeastern Peru, which has such a high elevation that experiences extreme weather conditions. Since living conditions and climate are very hard they moved to another region where the weather is warmer, is not as high as in Puno and the main economic activities are: Mining and Agriculture for exportation.
At the new place where they moved, is not easy for women to find a job, almost all of the ladies have family and they love knitting.
What PERULAND ALL NATURAL is doing through Fair Trade, is to generate opportunities for them to receive a fair and decent wage by applying their skills at the new place where they live. With the knitting the ladies can stay at home taking care of their family and children and helping to sustain it or like in many cases, they are single mothers which means they are the only economic support for the whole family.
